Training in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy
(Professional Doctorate in Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy - CAP)
This is a practical and theoretical training in psychoanalytical psychotherapy with children and young people for students who have completed the foundation training in Therapeutic Skills with Children and Young People or an equivalent course of study. Applicants must hold an Honours Degree and have at least two years' relevant work experience with children and young people.
The Professional Doctorate in Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training has been re-approved by the Association of Child Psychotherapists , the Professional body for child psychotherapists, and both the CAP training and the foundation training (Therapeutic Skills with Children and Young People) have received post-graduate academic validation with the University of East London/Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Strathclyde, respectively.
The course provides a thorough training in the clinical practice of child and adolescent psychotherapy. It takes a minimum of four years to complete following the foundation training. Graduates are eligible for membership of the Association of Child Psychotherapists and of the Scottish Association of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapists.

The training will include:
- Personal analysis minimum three times weekly with a qualified psychoanalytic psychotherapist recognized by the Scottish Institute of Human Relations and by the Association of Child Psychotherapists. Personal analysis is maintained throughout the training.
- Seminars on clinical practice and theory involving attendance at the Institute one day a week.
- The intensive treatment of three children, one pre-school, one latency, and one adolescent. Each child will be seen at least three times weekly. Individual supervision will be undertaken in relation to each case.
- Additional experience of less frequent treatments, assessments with children of varying ages and consultation with parents and other professionals.
An intake of trainees (maximum six) takes place in September each year, but informal enquiries can be made at any time. The deadline for the submission of applications is the end of May each year.
