The membership process is administered through SIHR Glasgow (click here for details). Initial contact should be made with Diane Henderson, Office Manager or in her absence Linda Thomson, Administrative Assistant on 0141 332 0011 or by email on glasgow@sihr.org.uk

Step 1
Those applying for membership of the Scottish Institute of Human Relations should be familiar with the Criteria for membership as approved by the managing Council (currently The Board of Management) in June 2003. These are sent with other relevant information in response to query. The Articles of Association of SIHR can also be provided if requested, or obtained from the website.

Step 2
Those applying for membership or to belong to the Network are requested to complete the relevant application form and send to Elspeth Crawford, Chair of the Membership Committee, c/o Diane Henderson, SIHR, 5, La Belle Place, Glasgow, G3 7LH. Applications for full membership should enclose a curriculum vitae and the names of two existing members willing to act as sponsors, and their contact details. This format enables those already in the SIHR membership to take a part in enabling applications. If however the applicant does not know anyone within SIHR, they can offer a reference instead who can attest to their ability to satisfy the criteria. All applicants are welcome to ask for contact with someone from the membership committee, to discuss any questions they have about the institute or about application.

Step 3
Following communication between the Administrative Office and the Membership Committee, one of the Members of Committee will contact either the sponsors or the applicant if sponsors are not available. The application will be discussed by the Membership Committee who will either seek further information or make a recommendation to Board of Management.

Step 4
Membership is a standing item on the Board of Management agenda and meetings are usually held once a month. The recommendations of the Membership Committee are presented to Board of Management, may be discussed, and Board of Management makes a final decision in good faith. Applicants will then receive a response from the Chair of Board of Management.

Step 5
Membership subscriptions for the year are currently £100 for full membership and £40 to belong to the Network. Individuals over 60 years of age who are retired may pay a concessionary fee of £40 for full membership. The membership fees of students on SIHR courses lasting at least one year are waived for the period that the individual is a student. Following receipt of the membership subscription new members are invited to an introduction meeting. These meetings explain organisational structures and procedures, indicate current happenings in SIHR and show members how books are borrowed from the library. Relevant policies can be communicated such as ethics and standards, health and safety etc. Just as importantly, those who attend, whether new members or those of longer standing, get to know each other, and share interests.
