Sutherland Trust

In a world characterised by complexity, speed of information and great diversity, there is a need to emphasise the study of human relations.

Equitable relationships with others, the understanding of feelings and their origins, and how to manage anxiety, which may cause conflict and unhappiness, are a quest for most people.

The Sutherland Trust exists to support the vital importance of human relations in the world of work in Scotland. Its aim is to encourage and enable organisations, groups, and individuals, to recognise and work with the systems of personal relationships inherent in decision making and in the executing of the various tasks and responsibilities at the workplace and beyond. To this end, the Trustees utilise the insights and knowledge of psychodynamics to provide a frame of reference. In this regard, the Trustees remain true to the legacy of J D (Jock) Sutherland, the distinguished Psychoanalyst and Social Administrator.

The Sutherland Trust is interested in doing three things

1. Organise, finance, market and deliver, lectures and seminars at regular intervals within the fields of education, healthcare, and social work. In doing so, it seeks to;

(i) Select subjects which are relevant to Scotland, and which may not yet have reached full consciousness in public life.
(ii) Employ eminent speakers, to deliver lectures and seminars of high calibre

2. Identify and undertake research at the following levels;

(i) Detailed student, patient and client work
(ii) A broader remit which seeks to influence Scottish policy.

3. Use the surplus from ticket sales and associated activities to provide awards to students of Human Relations.
