This well-established course is relevant to a wide range of professionals working with children and young people in health, social work, education and the voluntary sector. The course aims to provide an understanding of emotional development and relationships, and their relevance to working with children and young people. It offers the opportunity for enhancing work practice and for continuing professional development.

Learning takes place in small multi-disciplinary seminar groups with an emphasis on discussion and exploration, and with a view to the integration of observational, theoretical and work-based skills and understanding. The modules available are:

Work Discussion and Institutional Processes Seminar Years 1 and 2
Baby Observation Seminar Years 1 and 2
Young Child Observation
Theory Seminar Year 1 - Personality Development
Theory Seminar Year 2 – A History of Psychoanalytic Thinking
Child Development Research

The course is delivered at SIHR in Glasgow.

The modular structure of the course permits students to progress at the pace of their choice; to complete the whole Course or to select only particular modules. The Course can be completed in a minimum of two years part-time study. Students wishing to complete the Course in the minimum time should allocate the equivalent of 2 days per week - one for Course attendance over three ten-week terms, and one for associated course work.
