Therapeutic Skills with Children and Young People

Diploma / M.Sc., University of Strathclyde and The Scottish Institute of Human Relations

This modular course offers an in-depth understanding of infants’, children’s and adolescents’ emotional and personality development, the significance of primary relationships and their relevance to working with these age groups and their families.  It is applicable to a variety of professions working in a range of contexts, ie: Health, Social Work, Education and the Voluntary Sector, child psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapist, health visitors, nursery nurses, teachers, and others working directly with children.

The course is flexible in terms of how the modules can be undertaken and is taught in small, multi-disciplinary groups.  The modules include: a) work discussion seminars, which provide a forum to discuss and reflect on student’s current work practice, including the emotional impact of the work; b) theory seminars in emotional and personality development, and the significance of formative relationships from a psychoanalytic perspective; current developments in attachment theory and child psychology research; c) observation seminars of infants and young children.

The course has been running since 1989 and is recognised as making a valuable contribution to the skills of practitioners and clinicians working in the specialist services for infants, children & young people across Scotland.

The course is delivered at SIHR in Glasgow.

The modular structure of the course permits students to progress at the pace of their choice; to complete the whole Course or to select only particular modules. The Course can be completed in a minimum of two years part-time study. Students wishing to complete the Course in the minimum time should allocate the equivalent of 2 days per week - one for Course attendance over three ten-week terms, and one for associated course work.
